Arno Giles

ARNO VAN LAMMERSBEEK GILES WAS BORN FEBRUARY 1ST 1997 IN THE
NETHERLANDS. HE WAS TRAINED IN NARCOTIC DETECTION AND TRACKING.
HE GRADUATED FROM MID-MICHIGAN KENNELS IN 2000. HE WAS CERTIFIED IN
NARCOTICS DETECTION BEGINNING IN 2002 THROUGH THE UNITED STATES
POLICE CANINE ASSOCIATION. HE WAS ALSO CERTIFIED THROUGH THE
INTERNATIONAL POLICE WORK DOG ASSOCIATION IN 2005. HE WORKED WITH
OFFICER MARK GILES FOR THE SAUGATUCK-DOUGLAS POLICE DEPARTMENT.
WHILE IN SERVICE, MACʼS LANDING DONATED ANY VET SERVICES THAT ARNO
NEEDED. ARNO VISITED MANY SCHOOL CLASSROOMS FOR CAREER DAYS
AND D.A.R.E. CLASSES. HIS LARGEST SEIZE OF DRUGS IN ONE CASE WAS 50
POUNDS! ARNO OFFICIALLY RETIRED FROM SDPD ON APRIL 16TH 2007 AT THE
AGE OF 10 BECAUSE HIS VISION AND HEARING WERE DETERIORATING.
AN INTERESTING FACT IS THAT ARNO OUTLIVED ALL OF HIS GRADUATING
CLASSMATES BY YEARS! HE WAS A FAITHFUL PARTNER FOR MARK AND A
VERY GENTLE , LOVING, AND KIND FAMILY DOG TOO.
ARNO ENJOYED EATING PIZZA WITH THE FAMILY, CAMPING, CAR RIDES,
FRISBE, SWIMMING, AND PLAYING WITH TENNIS BALLS. HE LIKED TO SCARE
PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE CAR BY WAITING UNTIL THEY WERE CLOSE AND THEN
BARKING WHEN THEY WALKED BY! NEAR THE END OF HIS LIFE HE WAS NOT
ABLE TO GO ON CAR RIDES, CLIMB STAIRS, OR GO ON ANY TRIPS WITH THE
FAMILY ANYMORE. HIS WALKING BECAME DIFFICULT AND FALLING HAPPENED
CONSTANTLY. WE HAD TO PUT ARNO DOWN ON AUGUST 18TH 2011. HE WAS
14.5 YEARS OLD!
WE WERE SO BLESSED TO HAVE HAD ARNO FOR THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT
WE DID AND WILL MISS HIM TERRIBLY. GOD SPELLED BACKWARDS IS DOG! SO
WE ARE SURE THAT ARNO WILL BE WAITING FOR US-HIS FAMILY.

Importing and training hundreds of these dogs for law enforcement has been the most rewarding work for me. Every once and a while you get that special dog that just gets it every time and really wants the handler to be pleased. ARNO was one of those special dogs. He was not only a great police dog but from all accounts a true member of the Giles family. I hope all the great memories will help you guys through the loss of a great family member and public servant.

Although I only met Arno a couple times, I know that he brought great joy to the Giles family. Be comforted with the thought that he had a great life because of you and that you will be reunited with him someday. God bless you all as you get through this difficult time.

Having lost 2 dogs in the last year, I know the void that they leave. Your new dog won't replace Arno. But, she will love you and be loyal in her own way. Be thankful for the gift that Arno was to you.

Think of Arno every day when I look at Ziva, a tennis ball, and the big red ball that neither Ziva or Ginger will play with. We almost call Ziva Arno because they look so much alike. I look inside Zivas ears for the tattoos. Ziva likes to be hugged and cuddled where Arno did not. Arno will never be forgotten-he turned me into a dog lover:)
